What Is a Urogynecologist?

A urogynecologist is a board-certified and fellowship-trained subspecialty surgeon with expertise in treating pelvic floor disorders in women.

After completing medical school and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology or urology, urogynecologic surgeons complete three additional years of fellowship training in urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery (URPS) for seven years of surgical training after medical school. This subspecialty training and certification affords urogynecologic surgeons the expertise to offer patients integrated, personalized care plans and minimally invasive surgical treatments for pelvic floor disorders.

The urogynecologic surgeons at UChicago Medicine are also leading surgeon-scientists at the forefront of scientific efforts to improve patient outcomes and recovery.

What Are Pelvic Floor Disorders?

Pelvic floor disorders (urinary symptoms or incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and anal/fecal incontinence) are a group of conditions that affect the pelvic floor, which includes the muscles, ligaments and connective tissue that support the pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, vagina and bowel). Pelvic floor disorders adversely affect the lives of millions of women. Our urogynecologic surgeons published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that one in four American women over the age of 20 suffers from a pelvic floor disorder, including bothersome symptoms from urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse or accidental bowel leakage. Twenty percent of women will need surgery to treat their pelvic floor disorder.
