Ophthalmology Clinical Research
We perform basic science and clinical research as part of our commitment and passion for education and learning. As an essential healthcare system for thousands of patients in the region, we are actively engaged in clinical trials to study new medications and diagnostic tools that help shape treatments of the future. We have been involved in more than 45 clinical trials for patients with various ocular diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, central retinal vein occlusion, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and dry eye disease.

J. Terry Ernest Imaging Center
In 2018, the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science renovated and expanded its Eye Center at the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (DCAM) into a brand-new clinic space that is designed to enhance our eye exams and can accommodate twice as many patients as before. Our new imaging suite provides the latest in state-of-the-art technology and diagnostic equipment to serve our patients with the highest quality of care and treatment procedures.
Diagnostic testing and treatment procedures can include:
- Digital eye imaging
- Visual field testing to measure central and peripheral vision loss
- Optical coherence tomography to measure and diagnose a wide variety of diseases inside the eye
- Corneal topography to create three-dimensional maps of the surface of the eye
- B-scan ultrasonography which uses sound waves to identify problems that are not visible with light
- Fluorescein angiography to study blood flow inside of the eye
- Laser treatments for glaucoma and retinal diseases
- Intravitreal injections to treat retinal diseases
Toxoplasmosis Center
Directed by an internationally recognized and award-winning toxoplasmosis specialist, Dr. Rima McLeod, our toxoplasmosis center is dedicated to finding ways to prevent and treat this disease. Over the years, we have led national, multicenter studies to understand how T. gondii causes disease. We are leading a multi-center team that is studying new approaches to treating acute and chronic toxoplasmosis infection. Additional research into vaccines, new medicines, genetics of susceptibility and resistance, and other basic aspects of this infection are ongoing.
