Frequently Asked Questions About Transgender Care
What kind of care will I receive as a trans or non-binary patient at UChicago Medicine?
When you come to UChicago Medicine, we want you to feel like you have allies in your care who respect you and your gender identity. Helping you feel “seen” and understood is important, as many of us who treat transgender and gender non-binary patients identify as LGBTQ+ ourselves.
Here, we offer team-based care that includes primary care providers, endocrinologists, behavioral health experts, infectious disease experts, plastic surgeons and other subspecialists who are passionate about helping transgender and gender non-binary patients. Our team also includes social workers, outreach workers and others connected with community organizations who work together to advocate for you and your care.
What kind of environment can I expect when I come to UChicago Medicine?
We understand that getting care at a large institution like UChicago Medicine can be intimidating, especially if you are transgender or non-binary. We strive to provide care that makes you feel welcome, from your first interaction with our call center staff to set up an appointment, to how you are welcomed at the front desk, to how your physicians communicate with you. We aim to make you feel at ease in our clinics by using your preferred pronouns and taking time to understand your personal goals and health concerns. Our clinics also offer single-occupancy restrooms that are gender neutral.
But sometimes, we may not live up to our expectations or yours. We may mis-gender you unintentionally or we may make assumptions that are incorrect. When that happens, we welcome the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and so we can build a more inclusive environment and earn your trust.
What insurance do you accept?
UChicago Medicine participates in a wide range of health plans. We recommend contacting your insurance company to confirm your benefits and coverage.
