Ernest G. Chan, MD, MPH, is a highly skilled surgeon specializing in thoracic surgery and lung transplantation. Dr. Chan is an expert in treating complex lung and esophageal diseases, with extensive experience in lung cancer, esophageal cancer, benign esophageal disease, benign and malignant disorders of the mediastinum and chest wall, and airway disorders. He also has expertise in lung transplant surgery for patients with end-stage lung conditions.
With his dedication to advancing thoracic surgery, Dr. Chan uses the latest minimally invasive thoracic techniques and technologies, such as robotic surgery, to deliver the highest level of care and best outcomes possible to his patients, including patients with the most challenging cases.
Because Dr. Chan understands that each patient’s condition(s) and symptoms are different, he works closely with his patients and their families to develop comprehensive treatment plans that address their individual needs and healthcare goals.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Chan is an avid researcher. His research focuses on outcomes associated with clinical practice changes in lung and esophageal cancer as well as lung transplantation. He also continues to study health disparities in access to cardiothoracic surgical services and was awarded the UPMC Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery Academic Leadership Award in 2024 for his academic efforts. Dr. Chan is a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals, such as the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Transplantation and Clinical Transplantation.
