[MUSICAL STING] Hi. I am Dr. Jennifer Angeles. I'm a board certified internal medicine doctor. And internal medicine actually takes care of all the diseases that encompass internal medicine. So that is heart disease, pulmonary diseases, thyroid, diabetes, and also a lot to do with preventive medicine.
Being a doctor is always something you look up to somebody, right? But I did not grow up with a doctor family. I'm actually a military kid. So we transfer a lot. We move from different place and all that.
But I think the medical part of it, why I wanted to become a doctor, is the fact that the value instilled by my family into helping others. And what a beautiful way of doing that, more than becoming a doctor and being part of the people's lives? And I think that value, instilled by your parents, to help others, is the very core of why I wanted to become a doctor.
Chicago, for me, is my home. This is where I actually live, coming from another country, and build my family and my friends. My entire family is right here. And it has its own complexities and beauties and challenges. And that, I want to be part and have an impact in the life of the people that I call my home, my family.
And being part of University of Chicago is an amazing thing. Because not only you are part of people's lives, you are backed up by a powerful institution that actually gives you opportunities to help the people better. Because we have the facility. We have all the specialties here. And that's beautiful.
And I always tell this to patients when I see them in the clinic. I want to grow old with you. And when I say I want to grow old with you, it is going to be an up and down relationship, like any relationship.
Growing old with a patient means that there should always be communication. You want to involve them in their care, right? So any relationship will not work if there is no communication.
But this relationship is backed up by science. This relationship is backed up by evidence-based medicine. This relationship is backed up by understanding and compassion. So that's why this is my philosophy.
And my patients get that. I said, not only we are a family. We are a team. And we are not going to win this game if any one of us is going to be missing the game. So you're going to be here. I'm going to be here. And they know that.
