Some babies develop airway blockages before birth. The ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedure gives our team the time needed to safely create an airway for your baby before they take their first breath.

The University of Chicago Medicine Fetal and Neonatal Care Center (FNCC) brings together experts in high-risk pregnancies, newborn care, pediatric surgery, pediatric ear, nose, throat (ENT) care, and obstetric anesthesia.

When is the EXIT procedure used?

Doctors may recommend EXIT for:

Benefits of EXIT

  • Creates a safe way for your baby to breathe right at birth
  • Keeps your baby supported by the placenta during the procedure
  • Reduces chances of low oxygen, injury, or heart problems

What to Expect During EXIT

  • We start with advanced imaging, genetic counseling and team planning before delivery.
  • You will get medication to keep you asleep through the EXIT surgery and numb your pain.
  • Similar to a C-section delivery, your surgeon will make a cut in your belly so they can reach your baby.
  • The team keeps your baby connected to your placenta while they make sure your little one is breathing safely.
  • Once the baby’s airway is stable, the team will complete the cesarean delivery.
