[AUDIO LOGO] My name is Alex Lois. I'm one of the minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgeons at the University of Chicago. I specialize in foregut surgery or surgery on the esophagus and stomach, as well as complex hernia surgery, including both open and minimally invasive approaches to complex abdominal wall reconstruction.
Both my parents worked in the medical field, so medical care and medicine has always been a big part of my life. My mother has also suffered with a chronic medical condition, so seeing her experiences and interactions with the medical field has also allowed me to see firsthand the impact that physicians could have on their patients' lives and the lives of their families. I chose to become a surgeon specifically because I hope to improve the quality of my patients' lives through thoughtful and compassionate surgical care.
The University of Chicago is an amazing place and I chose to join the faculty here for several reasons. First, I wanted to work with other motivated, highly skilled individuals that were very passionate about the work that they do, and nowhere is that more true than the University of Chicago. Second, the medical center is enmeshed in what is a world class research university, so that offers unique opportunities for collaboration across different departments and divisions.
And finally, and most importantly, I've always loved the city of Chicago, and working here at the University of Chicago gives me the opportunity to serve the community that I also call home. I care very deeply about shared decision making. So it is my goal to teach patients about their disease processes, explain to them the different options that are available for treatment and help them understand the risks and benefits of those different treatment options.
My conversations aren't only about teaching, though, they're also about learning. And I hope through my conversations with patients to learn a little bit about them so that I can help them make treatment decisions that are most in line with their goals and values for their care.

Dr. Lois’ approach to care uses a combination of advanced laparoscopic, robotic-assisted and open techniques to address gastrointestinal disorders and abdominal wall reconstruction. He works closely with members of a multidisciplinary team, including gastroenterology, nutrition and plastic surgery in treating his patients. He strives to provide compassionate and data-driven care, while engaging patients in thoughtful shared decision-making to ensure treatment decisions align with his patients’ goals and values.
Along with to his clinical practice, Dr. Lois is active in his field, serving on several committees of national professional societies and contributing research to advance the care of patients with quality-of-life limiting foregut diseases and hernias. With his background in health services research, Dr. Lois’ work also aims to identify and diminish barriers to high quality surgical care in the region and beyond.
