[AUDIO LOGO] My name is Christopher Kasia, and I'm a Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist. I take care of patients with general GI disorders like abdominal pain, constipation, reflux, diarrhea, as well as liver diseases, whether they're immune-mediated, inherited, or others.
I became a physician because from my own experiences growing up, just having that one family doctor who really got to know you and you got to become kind of close friends with. And to me, that was very important. It was developing meaningful relationships but also being a caretaker of others. And my, own fascination for the field of medicine blossomed to want to become a gastroenterologist because a lot of the disorders that we experience in GI from abdominal pain, reflux, constipation, diarrhea, are huge quality of life issues. And for me, it's important to be able to get people back to live their best life.
I chose to come to University of Chicago due to the patient care environment and my partners and colleagues here. The people are fantastic. I can rely on them for support and to help patients get the care that they need whether it's from other specialists within my department or even other departments, whether it's surgery, nutrition, just to make sure people get truly comprehensive care with a warm heart and are guided through the entire process.
Being able to have a conversation like we are two old friends, just for me to help to understand what's going on with you and just have a unified plan of attack for how we're going to approach whatever troubles that you may be having from both a managing perspective, procedural, what other medicines we may want to do, it's a partnership. So that's how I approach our patient-to-physician relationship.

Dr. Kasia helps patient suffering from a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, from common issues, like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and gastroparesis, to more complex digestive issues that develop when the nervous system is not properly connecting with digestive system, or in easier terms, the “gut-brain connection” is broken. With skill and experience, Dr. Kasia uses endoscopic procedures to both diagnose ulcers, blockages, and inflammation as well as perform minimally invasive procedures to remove polyps, stop internal bleeding or stretch narrowed areas of the digestive tract.
Along with his gastroenterology focus, Dr. Kasia is a fatty liver disease (also known as steatotic liver disease) specialist and critical member of the multi-disciplinary Metabolic Liver Clinic, where he offers patients the most innovative and comprehensive treatments. Dr. Kasia’s goal is to help design individualized care plans that achieve the best possible outcomes for his patients.
Because there is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan for his patients, Dr. Kasia is invested in personalized care. He listens carefully, making sure every patient feels heard and involved in their treatment decisions. By building a trusting and supportive environment, he makes patients feel comfortable and confident in their care.

Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
