UChicago Medicine is committed to fostering a corporate culture of ethical behavior and integrity in all matters related to compliance with the laws and regulations that govern the delivery of healthcare. This aspiration is central to supporting patient care, research, and teaching at UChicago Medicine.
Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.

[AUDIO LOGO]
2
00:00:03,360 --> 00:00:03,860
3
00:00:03,860 --> 00:00:05,400
I'm Dr. Mecker Moller.
4
00:00:05,400 --> 00:00:08,250
I am a professor of surgery at University of Chicago,
5
00:00:08,250 --> 00:00:10,530
and I am a surgical oncologist.
6
00:00:10,530 --> 00:00:14,030
As a surgical oncologist, my expertise
7
00:00:14,030 --> 00:00:17,580
is to remove cancers from different parts of the body,
8
00:00:17,580 --> 00:00:20,300
mostly from the abdominal cavity and cancer that
9
00:00:20,300 --> 00:00:23,330
has spread into the abdominal cavity, as well as cancer
10
00:00:23,330 --> 00:00:25,770
from the muscles and soft tissues and skin.
11
00:00:25,770 --> 00:00:28,280
I chose to become a cancer surgeon
12
00:00:28,280 --> 00:00:33,620
because I find that it's the perfect combination for using
13
00:00:33,620 --> 00:00:37,640
my heart and my mind and my skills that I can help
14
00:00:37,640 --> 00:00:42,750
individuals that are fighting a really bad disease
15
00:00:42,750 --> 00:00:44,280
and that we can extend their life,
16
00:00:44,280 --> 00:00:45,690
that we can give them hope.
17
00:00:45,690 --> 00:00:49,790
And being able to use not only my skills, but the passion
18
00:00:49,790 --> 00:00:54,270
that I have for treating cancer and doing cancer research,
19
00:00:54,270 --> 00:00:56,550
it comes together as a whole for me.
20
00:00:56,550 --> 00:00:58,760
University of Chicago is quite a special place
21
00:00:58,760 --> 00:01:01,520
for any physician that wants to thrive and serve
22
00:01:01,520 --> 00:01:08,090
the community because we have a fantastic platform where we can
23
00:01:08,090 --> 00:01:11,910
provide care to communities that are underserved,
24
00:01:11,910 --> 00:01:14,030
that are at risk, as well as patients
25
00:01:14,030 --> 00:01:16,080
that are looking for high level of care.
26
00:01:16,080 --> 00:01:19,620
We have a fantastic team when it's not just me as a surgeon,
27
00:01:19,620 --> 00:01:22,820
but we have a strong, multidisciplinary approach
28
00:01:22,820 --> 00:01:25,560
to very complex cancer cases.
29
00:01:25,560 --> 00:01:30,980
And that makes us to not only serve and to move forward
30
00:01:30,980 --> 00:01:33,390
with the investigation and cancer,
31
00:01:33,390 --> 00:01:35,430
with providing the state of the art care,
32
00:01:35,430 --> 00:01:41,100
but also for us to thrive as surgeons and researchers.
33
00:01:41,100 --> 00:01:45,800
As a surgical oncologist, I'm a highly trained surgeon
34
00:01:45,800 --> 00:01:48,260
with several years of experience,
35
00:01:48,260 --> 00:01:49,970
now more than a decade of experience
36
00:01:49,970 --> 00:01:52,140
treating patients with very complex cancer,
37
00:01:52,140 --> 00:01:54,630
such as peritoneal carcinomatosis.
38
00:01:54,630 --> 00:01:56,450
These are very difficult cases that
39
00:01:56,450 --> 00:02:00,360
require high level of expertise to be treated.
40
00:02:00,360 --> 00:02:03,530
And the fact that we have been doing this for so many years,
41
00:02:03,530 --> 00:02:06,230
that I have been doing this for many years, that give us
42
00:02:06,230 --> 00:02:08,610
not only the knowledge, the skill,
43
00:02:08,610 --> 00:02:10,800
but also the understanding of the disease.
44
00:02:10,800 --> 00:02:14,060
And we are able to provide here at University of Chicago
45
00:02:14,060 --> 00:02:16,220
with a state of the art treatment
46
00:02:16,220 --> 00:02:17,990
for peritoneal carcinomatosis, which
47
00:02:17,990 --> 00:02:22,040
include the administration of the hyperthermic intraperitoneal
48
00:02:22,040 --> 00:02:24,950
chemotherapy and also the administration
49
00:02:24,950 --> 00:02:27,890
of pressurized intraperitoneal chemotherapy
50
00:02:27,890 --> 00:02:31,520
that we use as an adjuvant to the surgical component,
51
00:02:31,520 --> 00:02:34,440
as well as to the systemic chemotherapy component.
52
00:02:34,440 --> 00:02:37,370
I treat each patient like if they were my family.
53
00:02:37,370 --> 00:02:40,560
I believe that, when we are approachable,
54
00:02:40,560 --> 00:02:44,060
when the patients feel comfortable telling us
55
00:02:44,060 --> 00:02:48,480
what they fear or what they want to achieve from the cancer care,
56
00:02:48,480 --> 00:02:49,890
we become a team.
57
00:02:49,890 --> 00:02:53,625
And it's not just a team of me as a surgeon and my patient,
58
00:02:53,625 --> 00:02:56,000
but it's a team of all the other individuals that help me
59
00:02:56,000 --> 00:02:57,300
to take care of the patients.
60
00:02:57,300 --> 00:03:00,440
So within that philosophy, I think,
61
00:03:00,440 --> 00:03:05,048
is the team, the team effort and the team approach and the fact
62
00:03:05,048 --> 00:03:06,590
that we want to make the patient feel
63
00:03:06,590 --> 00:03:09,650
that we care about them, because we truly do.
64
00:03:09,650 --> 00:03:12,500
[AUDIO LOGO]
65
00:03:12,500 --> 00:03:13,000
